![]() ![]() The majority offer a sentimental view of ordinary life. “Guest is estimated to have written over 11,000 poems during his career. “The poetry in the “Friend” in the Sixties was dominated, as in the late Fifties, by the poems of Edgar A Guest, a prolific writer of verse who was born in Birmingham in 1881 and later moved to Detroit in the USA with his family. Here’s a little bit about Edgar from the Fiction Special: Guest was a name that appeared time and again throughout our 1950s and 1960s issues. There’s a “Friend” connection, too! When we were in our Archive, collating poems and stories for our 150th Fiction Special, Edgar A. It’s a gentle reminder to us all that even the most trying of times will end, and there are sunnier skies ahead. Guest wrote the inspirational “Don’t Quit” in the 1920s. One morning recently, just before Breakfast News began at 6am, I heard Idris Elba reading a poem on the BBC. I’m not usually much of a TV person, but like everyone else at the moment, I’ve been tuning in to see how things are developing with the coronavirus situation. You are not aware of just how close you are to winning and hence you must keep persevering and never give up. What you thought would be a terrible choice often turns out to be the complete opposite and makes you a winner. Success is achieved by overcoming fears and self-doubt. The struggler gives up so close to winning that it’s a pity. The goal is often closer than it seems to a tired person who has been struggling for a while. It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit. So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, When he might have captured the victor’s cup,Īnd he learned too late when the night slipped down,Īnd you never can tell how close you are, Stanza 3 and 4 Often the goal is nearer than, The progress may seem slow but you are still progressing and that is a sign of success. Although the problem seems colossal, if they only fight for a little longer, victory will be theirs. There is nothing worthwhile to fight for and all will to live diminishes. When a person gives up, life becomes meaningless. Stop for a while and take a rest but do not give up. There are times when the funds are limited and one finds themselves in debt they must persist. Regardless of how meticulously you have planned everything, some things still go awry. Sometimes it is pleasant while other times things tend to go wrong. Life is a journey and it is not always easy. ![]() When he might have won had he stuck it out When the funds are low and the debts are high,Īnd you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, Stanza 1 and 2 When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, Although the victory seems far, it is close. The one who manages to stick until the end wins the victory cup. Think of it as a ride, sometimes high and sometimes low. This is life and it is full of surprises. However, this poem significantly inspires all its readers to never quit and never give up in the face of calamity. Humans have a tendency to work within their comfort zone and when a hardship strikes, they tend to flee or battle with it only for a while before giving up. Life in all its glory comes with a lot of struggles and hardships but one must not bow down and accept defeat for what does not kill you, makes you stronger. ![]()
